World War II hero Woody Williams could be honored with statue at U.S. Capitol

Woody Williams, West Virginian, who was a medal of the recipient of the US final world war, could get a place of honor in the American Capital.

The State Senate Finance Committee on Wednesday afternoon made a proposal to honor Williams in the National Statueri Hall Collection, including 100 status contributed by 50 states.

“We are excited about the possibility of Woody in Woody, DC forever in Washington, DC,” said Senator Mike Olivario, R-Monongalia.

Two idols of West Virginia have been honored by the Francis Pearpont, who were establishing the state’s father and John Kenna, a Congress and senator John Kenna in the late 1800s.

Sankalp will change the statue of Kena with one who honored Williams. The statue of Kenna will be taken to the West Virginia Culture Center.

“This is such a tremendous respect. This is something about which we were so humble and excited, ”Chad Graham, the youngest of the five grandchildren of Williams, told the senators.

He said that the statue designation would ensure that “Woody’s platform is used to focus on others and to focus on the great kingdom of West Virginia”.

Williams died in 2022 at the age of 98.

Williams was honored with a medal for their works on IWO Jima during World War II. Under the frequent fire, he used a flame thrower to remove seven Japanese gun displacement, usually called “pill box”. That effort gave Marine a leg to move forward.

He went to the life of public service, advocating the veterans and for the gold star families who lost loved ones in military action. Williams died late last month at the age of 98.

After his death, Williams lay down in honor at Rotunda, US Capital. His contribution was celebrated by the Congress delegation of West Virginia and the national elected officials. Williams was one of the few Americans and was the first West Virginian to lie in the US Capital.

Advanced resolutions from Senate Finance will stop the search to produce an artist’s statue, direct the governor to provide funding and motivate the governor to send an official request to switch the Kenna statue with one for Williams.

“He was just a wonderful person,” said Phillips, R-Logan.
