Spring outdoor burning restrictions return

The West Virginia Division of Forestry is reminding the residents that the hours of the outdoor burning are now from 5 am to 7 am, which is according to the state code chapter 20-3-5.

“Our fire laws protect one of the most valuable resources in West Virginia: our forests,” said the State Forest Jeremy Jones. “We urge all those who decide to burn anything outside to get fully familiar with the guidelines available on our website. During the months of spring, our fuel does not take a long time to dry and fire is easily survived. ,


Jones said that he has already responded to about 100 fire this year.

“Since January 1, we have responded to 95 fire that has been burnt in about 389.1 acres,” Jones said.

West Virginia Division of Forestry lists the following rules when it comes to burning outdoor:

  • All fire should have a safety bandage
  • The safety bandage should be cleaned with burnt material and should be at least 10 feet wide
  • Should be participated in the fire until completely extinguished
  • Only vegetative materials such as leaves, brushes and yard clipping are allowed to be burnt
  • Spark-showing machinery such as power shovel or fire under fire should have a sufficient spark arile
  • Inflammatory waste disposal areas should be removed annually all grass, brushes, debris, and other inflammatory materials, which are adjacent to the disposal areas to provide adequate protection, which prevent fire from avoiding fire on adjacent land

An permits are required for any commercial burning during the prohibited period. Permits are issued by local WVDOF offices.

Whoever causes fire on any grass or forest land, will have to reimburse the state for cost to suppress the fire. Forest fire caused by negligence can result in a fine that ranges from $ 100 to $ 1,000 with additional citizen punishment of $ 200.
