School in ‘very dire’ situation as fight for accreditation, financial stability continues

Leaders of St. Augustine University on Monday answered questions about the financial future of HBCU.

SAU Interim President Marcus Burges spoke to the media after a week, in which Wral News came to know that the university did not pay its employees on time and contractors and IRS owed millions of dollars.

He believes that the school is in “very serious” position, but said that it will not stop as it fights to maintain its recognition.

Burges became the interim president in December after the board evacuated President Christine Johnson-Mackfel.

Wral has failed to pay their employees several times in the last few months – the most recent parole on 9 February.

Burges say that employees have been paid now, but they say meeting parole will still be a challenge as the university is facing a cashflow problem.

Burges says that the university has hired a financial counseling team and is meeting with IRS and others who have money.

“The issues we faced did not begin yesterday, but I assure the community that we are working with fever to structure a coon and viable plan to remove this respected institution,” said Burges.

The press conference was held a day after the SAU’s students and the Alamas met for a vigilance at the Chapel of St. Augustine. Last week, the families of the students told Wral News that their children had not received the tuition refund check, a family said that their child had not found even one in the fall semester.

Burges said that one of the biggest challenges would be with the recognition of St. Augustine. He is leading to Atlanta on Monday afternoon to hear an appeal with the recognized organization of the school.

St. Augustine is placed on probation after struggling with financial issues.

Burges said that if the school loses its recognition, they will register a legal challenge.
