Route 31 underpass in Geneva set to close Monday

Officials said the route 31 underpass in Geneva will be closed for four months starting on Monday as the union Pacific works on its West line.

Vehicles going north on Route 31 in Batavia will be directed for a news release from the city of Geneva, Faban Parkway, Route 25 and then in Route 64 in St. Charles Route 64, or Versa for vehicles going south. The release states that local traffic can use third street in Geneva.

Construction on the train bridge, which is currently to be completed on 24 June, is a part of a large project by Union Pacific to create a third railroad line from West Chicago via Geneva about the project. The website says that the third main line project was launched in 2022 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.

According to the project, the project should smooth rail traffic and reduce the conflict between goods and metra trains. A fact sheet about the project says that the railway line is one of the busiests in the county, with more than 50 freight trains a day and 60 Metra trains carry about 30,000 passengers per day.

The fact sheet says that this project is expected to reduce the waiting time at the rail crossing, reduce the delay in both commuter and freight trains, reduce the inaction of goods trains, reduce train congestion and improve security.


Monday will mark the second time that the route 31 underpass will be closed for the third main line project. The underpass was first closed for the first time in July 2023.

According to the news release, the crew will construct a new train bridge and pavement amendments starting on Monday. Officials said the underpass was closed last time, the crew constructed the support structures to the south of the train bridge.

According to the city website, other roads in the entire Geneva are expected to be closed in the coming year in the coming year due to the project, but they will be closed only one road at a time.

The crossing on Third Street will remain closed for about three months starting in late June, and crossings in Western Avenue will also be closed for three months starting in mid -September. Both start dates are temporary, the website says.

Geneva’s Metra train station outbound platform, which is platform number two, has been closed from October 9, 2023 according to the city website. Passengers should use the temporary platform located east of Third Street instead.

The city’s website says that the root 31 overflow daily fee parking sites and third street commuter permit tracks are currently closed for construction. The overflow daily fee will be very close to the entire project as it is being used as a construction staging area.

The Fox River trail is open during construction, but according to the website, heavy construction has been temporarily prepared to avoid machinery. The pedestrian bridge under the train tracks, which goes above the Fox River, is expected to be open during construction.
