There is a petition deal for a teenager charged with the shooting of June 2022 outside the Gary West Side Graduation at the US Steel Yard.
19 -year -old Joshua Hughes appeared in front of Judge Salvador Waskese on Thursday. His lawyer Andrew Kires said for a small continuity, stating that a petition is subject to negotiation and the lawyers of both sides were trying to twist the final details of the system.
Hughes tested for his role in shooting was expected to begin on February 20. Hughes was 17 years old when it happened. According to Lake Superior Court records, they were accused with a deadly weapon, all levels armed with hooliganism, a gun, criminal negligence, and each of the hazardous possession of two cases of battery.
About 200 students were scheduled to graduate during the June 2022 ceremony. Graduates and guests were exiting the stadium after Sunday’s celebrations when shots burst outside the stadium. The Gary Police responded to a call to assist the security head of the Gary Community School Corporation as a battle was broken as people were leaving the graduation ceremony at around 5:32 pm, witness accounts started a fight in the stand during earlier activities.
Once the deal goes out, it will require the approval of Chief Deputy Prosecutor Barb O’Conel which is overseeing the case, Kires said.
“Is the state open to the renaissance of terms?” Vaske’s asked.
Waske’s said that while this is certainly not their desire, nor their policy, when it is close to the date of the actual court, to shut down a test, if the prosecutor’s office and the defense agreement is under the office and the defense agreement then a deal will soon be upcoming, it will do so.
The court documents alleged that both the hughes and another teenager were in the cap and gown, when they allegedly firing back from the US Steel Yard in the 5th Avenue and the US Steel Yard in the Maryland Street, firing back to “many individuals”, according to the potential cause affidavit.
