The number one streaming service in the US is not Netflix (NFLX), Disney+ or Amazon Prime Video: This is YouTube. According to a new monthly Nielsen report released this week, YouTube was the top streaming platform in the US in a line (January 2023 to January 2024) in the last 12 months, at the peak in November 2023 when it took 9 percent of TV streaming that month. Netflix has ranked second consecutively, followed by Hulu and Amazon Prime.
In January, overall streaming took 36 percent time when Americans spent watching TV, according to Nielson, YouTube took 8.6 percent of that chunk.
YouTube has focused on its user experience on television compared to smartphones, tablets and computers. Neil Mohan, CEO of the platform appointed in February 2023, recently revealed as the alphabet (Googl) that its users from all over the world watch more than 1 billion hours on their TV each day.
Mohan wrote in an open letter in January, “The audience wants everything from a live sports game to the BBC to Khan Academy and Nicutorials at the same place.” He said that the partition between the creators and the major studios is disappearing. “They are re-defined the future of the entertainment industry with a top-oriented story, which cannot be rejected only as’ user-borne materials.”
YouTube said in a blog post on Tuesday (February 20) that the short-form video feature launched in 2020 doubled between the number of audiences of Youtube shorts, January 2023 and September 2023.
The alphabet highlighted the major streaming benefits through YouTube in its latest quarterly income report. YouTube’s live TV service, YouTube TV, reported 8 million customers last month. CEO Sundar Pichai of the alphabet and Google (Googl) shouted YouTube to be the main driver of the company’s membership revenue. YouTube paid membership, including YouTube premium and YouTube music, reached 100 million customers at the end of 2023.
