College Park, MD.-Terence Shannon Junior defeated 27 points and number 14 Illinois on Saturday 85-80 and won their first road against Terrapies since 2011.
Jahimir Young had 28 points to lead Maryland, who had 10–3 against Ilini after entering Big Ten in 2014-15 and defeated Illinois 76–67 in the first meeting of teams.
Illinois Guard Marcus Domask said, “There is no question that everyone knows that they had our number in previous years.” “To come here on the road in a hostile environment, and I know they had some goods for their students. I know they were excited for it, but there is a lot of meant to come here and win.”
Domask scored 19 points for Ilini (19–6, 10–4 Big Ten), giving her over 2,000 points for her career, including four sessions in Southern Illinois. They have 2,004 points and are one of the four active Big Ten players with 2,000, including Young, Northwestern’s Boy Bui and Perder’s Zach Edy.
Maryland (14–12, 6-9) wore a 1970s style uniform to honor former coach Lieuti Drisail, who died in 92 on Saturday. The school held a moment of silence for Drisail, who won 348 games with Terps since 1969–86 and was included in the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018.
Illinois led to almost the second half, although Maryland briefly tied it in 68. The best chance of taking the lead came when Young gave a taste to the circumference by 74–73 with Illinois and reached the other end of the court. But his shot attempt was well defended by Domaska, and Justin Harmon found Kolman Hawkins in infection for a paste while foul with 2:55 remaining.
Illinois coach Brad underwood said, “Those are drama that send you home in the NCAA tournament.” “Those are plays that make giants. We talk a lot about them. Are plays that you should be able to stretch in the last third of the season.”
Hawkins tried free-thro, and Maryland did not get into possession until the poisonous long hit a 3-paper with 10.2 seconds. But Shannon made four free throw in concluding seconds as Ilini abolished the five-game slide at the college park.
“Finally it is good that I can shut it down, the only place (in Big Ten) I did not win,” said underwood. “It is nice to be able to do so.”
Underwood credited Shannon for his work guarding the youth in the closing minutes. Before the late Putback for Maryland’s final basket, Young recalled 7 of the 8 field-goes attempts.
Maryland coach Kevin Willard said, “I think Jahimir was fouled about 12 times and did not call him.” “I think if we are calling the foul down at one end, it is the same. He has done a good job, but you have found it to call it in the same way.”
The Illinois was 32 out of 36 in the free-thro line, while Maryland was 24 out of 29 in a game with 47 fouls.
Big picture
Illinois: In second place in Ilini Big Ten, there are two games behind the perdue and two games in the disadvantage columns on Visconsin, Michigan State and Northwestern. Illinois improved 4-3 in conference road games.
Maryland: Terrapins did not lose a conference home game in the previous season at the beginning of coach Kevin Willard. But this disadvantage dropped Maryland at home 4-4 in Big Ten and the team’s unconscious NCAA became a hit for the tournament expectations.
