Another attempt to implement the rights of abortion in the New Hampshire Constitution failed this time in the Senate on Thursday.
The state law prohibits miscarriage after 24 weeks of pregnancy, except that when mother’s health or life is in danger or malignant fetal discrepancy. Earlier this month, the Republican-led House voted to protect the rights of abortion to the extent in favor of a constitutional amendment on 193–184, which was necessary to carry forward the proposal less than the three-fiveth majority.
On Thursday, the Republican-led Senate rejected a uniform measurement, in which 14–9 voting was held with party lines against the proposal of a more widely word to add language to the Constitution protecting “personal reproductive autonomy”. Since the US Supreme Court overturned the constitutional right of abortion in 2022, voters in seven states have influenced or defeated the state.
New Hampshire does not allow a citizen -led ballot initiative. Changes in the constitution of the state can be made if voters agree to question the three-five part of the Legislature, then the amendment should then be approved by at least two-thirds of the majority.
A Democrat Sen Becky Whitley, a Democrat from Hopkinton, argued that the current absence of the state of restrictions on abortion before 24 weeks is not equal to a positive right.
“I get up for the younger girls ahead of me, who now have less rights, rights, who took me directly to this room, and helped me make a family and life of my dreams and a career of life,” he said.
A Republican Sen Bill Gainon, a Republican Sen of Sandown, said that voters have already made their views clear by choosing their representatives.
“This legislature has been clear and consistent while talking about the rights of abortion,” he said.
The Senate was also taking bills on Thursday to expand access to drug-aid abortion and to ban the New Hampshire police from assisting out-off-state investigation into “legally protected health care activity”.
The house has rejected some measures to restrict abortion, including a ban on the process 15 days after pregnancy. This would be similar to a clear restriction because virtually no one knows that they are pregnant at that point.
Another rejuvenated measure will require abortion to perform in hospitals with two doctors after 15 weeks and in hospitals with newborn intensive care units.
