Music lovers are in mourning and at the local level, the national level famous music legend dex is in mourning after the death of Romeber.
The music of Romeber was known as the nationwide, but his punk and rockability roots were in the triangle here when he was only in 5th grade in Chapel Hill.
Lucky people can be seen in the recent triangle music places like The Cave or local 506 to live locally. But his music is in Karboro and Chapel Hill in the 1980s, when his high-energy band flat duo jets started making waves in the Northern Carolina music scene-then nationwide, play live on David letterman and appear on MTV.
He shared screen and stage with other underground icons like REM, Iggy Pop and B -52S. His work also inspired the mythological punk band white strips of ‘Seven Nation Army’ fame.
Culture and history of Romever’s life and music shaped Chapel Hill. According to a 1985 article by Daily Tarhail, “Many alleged chapels did not move until the dexter moved his hair and hanged in his eyes.”
Dex Romeber’s family announced his death
Romever’s family announced his death in a Facebook post on Friday, which has since started going viral as unhappy friends, fans and family, who share memories of his life.
“It is our tragic duty to inform the world that our dear younger brother John Michael Romeber II – You know him as a dexter – died at home on Friday, 16 February 2024. He was 57 years old, and found by his sister Monica. It is believed that he died for natural reasons; a medical examination is pending.”

“Singer, guitarist, artist and Bon Vivent, Dexter Romever was one of the most acclaimed artists in Roots-Roots-Underground, going back to his time with Kamikaz. But the band put on the map was flat duo jets,” he wrote.
Romeber also played with his sister Sarah Romeber, who was famous for his own music work with the prestigious North Carolina -based band Lats Active.
His most recent album was “Good Thing Goin”, released in 2023, his late sister was dedicated to Sara.
