The Lawrence School District has announced that this year there will be no more early dismissal for middle and high schoolrs this year to make up for the lost time due to the weather, so that some high schools are upset to get out of enough to get out .

The district canceled the school in four days in January, and some students would have to make lost time.

A change applies to all grade levels: all schools will be in sessions on Monday, 15 April. That day was made in the calendar as the day of makeup.

Otherwise, the early childhood and primary school schedules still get state-essential minimum instructions hours, Julie Boyle, a spokesman from the district has written to school families in an email.

However, there will be major changes for middle and high schoolrs starting after the spring break. None of the six secondary schools will dismiss quickly for the remaining 10 Wednesdays of the 2024 spring semester.

In addition, from Monday, March 18, all four middle schools will start at 8:05 am – they usually do 10 minutes ago – and will dismiss through Monday to Friday at 2:56 pm. High schools will maintain a single beginning and dismissal time.

“The district understands the program of the revised middle and high school, can cause difficulties for some of our school families. We honestly apologize, “Boyle wrote. “It is our hope that by announcing these changes now, the family will be able to use the next 10 days to plan to make any necessary adjustments for the remaining of the school year.”

On Thursday afternoon, about 50 free state high school students went out of the building in protest against the schemes. After the spring break, a walkout is planned in both high schools, which is next week.

Boyle wrote that the district considered adding days at the end of the year; However, with the holiday of Memorial Day, concerns include previous plans, student attendance and availability of options made by employees and school families, “he wrote.

The district is working with a state auditor to ensure that this school completes a minimum of 1,116 instructions for the year, which is necessary to stay in compliance and recognized, Boyal said.

“Reviewing our census of school hours, the auditor advised that the parents-teacher conferences held on August 14 and 16 cannot be counted towards the minimum requirements of 1.5 days. Since our regular schedule had not started yet, they do not do hours. Complete the definition of ‘discussion about student progress’ as required by the State Law (KSA 72-3115), “Boyle wrote.

Boyle told us back in January that the district usually waits to calculate its directive hours until months with extreme weather conditions. District leaders will determine if they have to add minutes or hours to meet the requirements of the state, and if necessary, the school board determines how to make time, Boyle said at that time, and previous school boards Have added minutes to the remaining school days.

But for secondary students on Wednesday, the plan to make the initial dismissal is not an item on the school board agenda, and the board is not getting again till Monday, 25 March.

Boyle wrote in an email that “Staff plan time on 12 April on April 12 and the staff recording and reporting fixed on 22 May, converted the employees’ professional development time to meet the minimum requirements of the state. Has gone.”

Representatives of the Lawrence Education Association, the Teachers Association of the district on Thursday afternoon did not respond to an email seeking comment for this article.

However, a member of the district employees sent us an email stating that “LEA was not consulted about the scheme” and “Lea leadership in the process of working with our (Kansas National Education Association) team Is, to find out what the next steps are seen. “

Teachers were informed that “the district understands that these amended programs can create difficulty for some employees and the employees reflect the decrease in the time of the plan at the end of the year. We honestly apologize and the adjustment and compromise Appreciate you who are helping us to ensure that the district state lives in compliance, ”according to the forward email.
