Two people have been arrested on the allegations that they committed a theft in an abandoned building on the former US steel site in Jolit.
According to the Jolit Police Sergeant, the smoke from the former US steel property near the 900 blocks of Collins Street started by patrol officials around 9:30 am on Tuesday. Dwayne English.
The officers went to the property and saw many small fire inside the abandoned building. The fire was extinguished by firefighters.
Inside the building, the authorities discovered a large amount, which was stripped of the copper wire, the English said. Officers also found a jeep compass vehicle, which was recalling the driver’s side tire, a poleris sportsman ATV, power saw, an ax and a generator.
The authorities found no one inside the building, English said. He said that Jeep Compass and ATV were landed from the spot.
Officials reviewed the monitoring video from a nearby business, showing two people to leave the building and carry the vehicle tire, the English said.
At some point, Jolit’s 35-year-old Pedro Rhodro Rodriguez-Kastnada told the police that his jeep was stolen from his residence at Compass Cass Street, English said. However, the vehicle was apparently the same as from the former American steel site.
Officials responded to Rodriguez-Kastaida residence, English said. He noticed that both 47-year-old, Jolit, He and Eric Mazarigos-Roldon matched the suspects seen on the surveillance video, said.
Two people also smell of smoke, English said.
When the authorities challenged the stolen vehicle claim, Rodriguez-Kastaida and Mazarigos-Roldon “indicated their participation in stealing,” English said.
Both people were then arrested for the probable cause of theft, occupation of stolen equipment, criminal trespasses for real assets and criminal damage.
The men were then released from police custody and on March 5, notice was given to the Wil County Courthouse.
