Charmco, w.va. – Through the first three quarters of the matchup between Greenbier West and James Monroe, neither the team was able to move beyond five points.
But in the fourth quarter, Maveryrix scored just two points and he made some time to sweep the regular season series from his regional rivals, 42–31. JMHS defeated West, 62–59 in overtime at Lindside last month.
“We are already a good defensive team. But in the fourth quarter, we knew Bridan [McClung]He is a great player. We knew that he was going to keep his head down and trying to get a little more, “James Monroe’s head coach Matt Sowse said.” So we transferred some things to compensate for this. Cavaliers gained an initial lead of five points and extended 8–5 after the first quarter. McClung GWHS climbed to fifth in the list of three-pointer midway through the initial frame. James Monroe used a 9–0 run to take a 15–1 lead between quarters, which was his largest in the first half. Maveryx led 22–19 in Haftime.
In the third quarter, the West took the lead in the last minute, before the Bajar-Beating paste of Leton Dodi extended Maverix to 30–29 in the fourth quarter.
Maveryx went on a 10–0 run to make a double-point lead and allowed McClung to trim a transition to McClung as the only point in the West in the fourth quarter. McClung led West (10–9) with 16 points.
Center Brady Baker led Maveryx with 19 points. Two-time all-state lineman played more in his junior season in football.
“He is working hard. A lot of that work is for football. But it has made some good things for us from basketball. His footwork has become very fast. He is a man there. He is difficult to handle.”
James Monroe (14-4) is demanding his third consecutive class A State Championship after making four debut with last year’s title team.
“I really feel with this team that they can go as far as they want to go. I really believe that we are quite defensively good that we can compete with anyone.
