Globalfoundries 2022 is the first manufacturer to receive funds from the Chips and Science Act, a biden administration initiative that aims to strengthen American role in the production of a semiconductor. Chips are essential for manufacture in motor vehicle, aerospace, defense and artificial intelligence industries.

Globalfoundries have said that the semiconductor market is expected to double in the next decade. According to the National Institute of Standards and Technology, or NIST, there are only four companies outside China that provide semiconductor manufacturing on the scale of globalfoundry.

Appreciating the announcement, in a statement, American Sen Burney Sanders (I-VT) office stated that about 85 percent of phones use a Globalfoundries chip.

The demand for chips increased during the Covid-19 epidemic as the sale of smartphones and other products. But there was a decrease due to the disruption of the supply chain, leading to a backlog of delivery in automatic and other industries. The purpose of the Chips and Science Act is to strengthen manufacturing in the US to prevent future disruptions.

Globalfoundries said in a statement, “The new FAB of GF will be specificly deployed to occupy the feature-rich, required chip segment, which is expected to represent more than 60 percent of the semocard market.”

The company is also preparing to upgrade and expand its capacity to its Essex junction fabrication facility. The company has stated that the plant is expected to manufacture the next generation of Gallium Nitride (GAN) semiconductor for use in electric vehicles, power grids, data centers, 5G and 6G smartphones and other important technologies. GAN semiconductor is an emerging material in manufacturing.
