Dozens of CCSU students displaced after residence hall fire – NECN

About 60 students have been temporarily displaced after a report in a report at the Central Connecticut State University Residence Hall.

A university spokesperson said that after 6 pm, the first floor of James Hall caught fire.

The students were evacuated and the New Britain Fire Department responded to the spot.

No one hurt and the university says that all the students are safe. Around 60 students living in James Hall went to Memorial Hall and Students Center, while the university coordinated temporary housing.

President Zulma Toro said that the students living on the first floor were taken to a hotel. Those on the second floor were strongly encouraged to stay in a hotel for the night.

Apart from this, any student living on the third through the eighth floor can also stay in a hotel. According to Toro, the university is providing rooms to all the students affected at any cost.

The spokesperson said that the sprinkler system of Derm helped keep the fire under control. Toro said that investigators believe that the reason for this was electricity.

“The university is grateful that everyone is safe. The students did exactly what they should do in such a situation and we are working on making them comfortable in a new place, ”Toro said.

Counseling services will be available to students. James Hall is one of the oldest dorms in the campus.

The fire is being investigated by the State Fire Marshal.
