The ceramic piece of Lawrence High School Senior has been selected to showcase at a National Ceramic Conference in this spring.

The piece of Oliver Elvel is one of the 150 tasks selected for an exhibition at the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts Annual Conference, which he said is an honor.

Elvel said, “Art and ceramic is a passion for me, and I hope to continue to continue the work that is identified in this way and just be able to share your art with the community.”

The portrayed piece of Elvell, “My Greenhouse”, is an ode for their personal connection with nature. By creating it, it was allowed to use it with a careful process of shaping small soil items, such as plants on the side.

“I made it so that I could find out to make small things in the soil because it was a subject that I was working on,” Elvell said. “And there are all things like luggage that you will find in my room, and I named it ‘my greenhouse’ because I have a lot of plants and the plants were one of my special interests at that time.”

When Elvel’s ceramic teacher at LHS, Emily Markolatos suggested that he presents NCECA, both of them deliberately choose which piece of it. He said that he felt that “my greenhouse” was his best.

Switching between art mediums is now an ideal for Elvel because it often makes with clothes, paint, soil, beads and other ingredients at the same time. In the last summer, he designed and depicted a bench as part of his training with a local art-based organization Van Go for adolescents and young adults.

Now in its final semester of high school, Elvell plans to participate in an art-based college or university next year, which is ready for a career in making.

The NCECA conference is to be hosted in Richmond, Virginia this month, but Elvell said it is almost likely to participate in the art exhibition.
