Bike route could join group of routes across Indiana

A new long -range bicycle route between the Northwest Indiana and Indianapolis region may soon join a group of bike routes in Indiana.

However, not yet look for signals marking the routes.

The Indiana Transport Department has planned an official designation for the United States Cycle Road 37 at a distance of 182 miles from Griffith to Carmel, outside Indianapolis.

The northern end of USBR 37 will be the place where the Eri Lakwana Trail crosses the Oak Savanna Trail in Grifith.

Indot asked for a public response to the proposed route last year.

As a result of the comments, the route was replaced in West Lafet, White County and Jasper County to improve safety for riders.

Indot does not take a cost to apply the bike route, as it does not need to pour the signals marking the route

However, this route plans to look at the benefits and costs of signals.

The INDOT notes that USBR 37 is “experienced, long -range bicycle riders … … who are riding comfortably on most types of facilities including roads without special treatment for bicycle drivers. This group also includes utilitarian and entertaining riders who are sufficient to ride on busy roadways and navigate vehicles.”

Some parts of some USBRs use bike trails, but most miles are accompanied by roads and roads.

Attempts to nominate USBR 37 were made under the leadership of Adventure Cycling Association located in Missoula, Montana, along with other long distance bike routes.

ACA suggested a route made of city roads, trails, county roads, state roads and American highways, and INDOT stated that they receive letters of support from courts passing through the route.

If approved by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officers (Aashto), the USBR 37 will join the four other officially nominated long distance routes in Indiana, about 700 miles.

Aashto is the same organization that coordinates the number of interstate highways and American routes.

The USBR routes in 34 states exceed 18,900 miles.

“They are trying to mimic our interstate (highway) system,” said the Mich Barology, Transport Plan Manager and the North -West Indiana Regional Planning Commission active transport planner. “The more of these we have, the better for all of us.”

In Indiana, USBR 36 passes through Illinois to Michigan through Northwest Indiana. It uses local roads and US12 along with the Eri Laikwana Trail in Lake County and Oak Savanna Trail and Preary Dunland Trail in Porter County.

The USBR 35 is a 381-mile route via Indiana, which range from Michigan border in Lapart County to Ohio River in Jeffersonville.

Two other routes, USBR 235 and USBR 50, pass through Central Indiana.
