The WVSU West Virginia Department of Education is one of the seven regional competition hosts for 2024 academic performance.
Two teams from each school can enter double elimination competitions, and Friday’s teams included Poca High School, George Washington High, Replay High, Charleston Catholic, St. Albens, Buffalo and Sisonville High School students.
Students were answering time -bound questions in many different categories including mathematics, science, history, sports, fine art, pop culture, among other subjects.
The Director of WVDE Communications, Christie Dey explains how the third annual academic performance now works as it leads to the final competitive teams.

“We have found areas around the state, they have started in Marshall, they will finish with a closing at the State Culture Center on 23 April, so the top two teams from each region will proceed at the conclusion,” Dey said.
The shutdown began in Marshall in January. Since then, teams from across the state have been making their way around various state colleges and universities to compete and display their knowledge.
Dey said that educational performance started in 2022 with 21 teams in its first year and now it is up to 90 teams as more schools are included every year.
West Virginia performance is one of the largest high school educational competitions in the country, using questions from the National Educational Quiz Tournament.
Dey said that it is a way for students to keep their educational skills in testing such as they get an opportunity to do physically in sports.
He said, “We needed an opportunity to celebrate academics in a similar way, as we do athletic competitions, and this is what gives this performance,” he said.
Dey said that students seek a healthy and full way to share their knowledge, and this gives them a chance to do so.
Dey said, “We have seen that it goes down for very harsh one-point matches, and so the teams start getting ready and ready to participate.”
He said how it works to make a team sponsored by a sponsor in each school and to prepare them in a decline semester to compete in the spring.
On January 13, one of the two teams of Huntington High School in Marshall finished first and one team of Vinfield High got second place.
On 9 February at the University of West Virginia, two teams of Morgentown High School put both the first and the second there in the competition, but the prescribed one at the Shepherd University was postponed due to bad weather.
Dey said that this performance can challenge a lot for the students but they enjoy it.
“It is really taxing, I mean that you must have a complete depth of knowledge in these material areas to perform well, and these students are ready and ready to compete,” Dey said.
Fairmont State University will be the next host of the competition on 8 March. The Concord University will follow Logan on 16 March and Southern West Virginia Communia and Technical College on 23 March.
Dey said that the winning teams will win cash prizes at Finale on 23 April at the Culture Center and of course, would get the rights to be stunned.
