Charleston, W.V.
Sen Amy Gradi (R-Manan)
The committee recalled the Bill, SB 813, that it originally passed on Tuesday and removed an amendment, which would have allowed school coaches to coach the travel teams as well. The amendment was approved on a voice vote. The committee then passed the bill in its original form.
This remedy will allow students athletes to play travel balls in a game while they are playing school games in the season.
Sen Shiksha Samiti Chairman Amy Gradi, R-Masan, told the committee that he had heard from David Price, Executive Director of the Commission of West Virginia Secondary Schools, David Price, who expressed concern about the bill. He said that Price explained why SSAC does not allow the bill to be allowed at present.
Graddy said, “What he said to me was concerned about injuries and this regulation helps to protect children from being injured.”
Sen. Mike Olivario, R-Monongalia, was written for a revision and withdrew on Thursday. He pledged his support for the bill as it moves forward.
“I think it just gives some flexibility,” said Olivario. “I don’t think we necessarily imagine a fully overlapping journey program with school sports programs, but they overlap a little over edges or specific events.”
Other senators stated on Thursday that the journey season, especially for the game, is usually after the school season for that game.
Gradi is the lead sponsor of the bill.
“Many of these parents and students are choosing a trip to play for their high school team as the journey gives them more risk for more college coaches and other things. So we want to be able to achieve that exposure and have a sense of pride for your community to play, ”Gradi earlier this week.
The bills now head the full Senate for consideration.
