FAFSA changes lead to deadline extensions at WVU

MorGantown, W.VA. – The University of West Virginia is extending its FAFSA filing deadline due to delay in rollout of change in federal financial assistance form on 1 April.

George Yanchak

WVU Hub Director, Nomination Management Office, George Yanchak, urge students and families to receive their applications before the time limit to maximize the amount of educational aid.

“Complete the priority filing date of April 1 and qualify for all financial assistance West Virginia University institutionally as well as federal and state assistance,” said Yanchak.

Yanchak said that students should beware of scholarship and aid deadline.

In 2019 and 2020, compulsory changes for free applications for the federal student support process by the Congress are creating delays and frustration between families and students.

Due to FAFSA problems, the State Higher Education NITI Aayog voted in December to expand the deadline to apply for Promise Scholarship and State Higher Education Grant by May 1.

Fafsa problems are almost from months. After a brief testing period, the system went live on 1 December, after about 60 days there would be formal forms compared to students and their families. The US Department of Education Computer System has been plagued by issues, since the rollout has resulted in availability of sporadic systems. Federal officials said some systems were not updated in about 50 years.

“Unfortunately, there is some delay in processing,” said Yanchak. “The time on the department’s website has reduced which has delayed processing.”

This form is available online, and provides help to WVU families as they begin to complete the form. While some at the national level believe that changes have thrown the process into anarchy, others say that changes have resulted in a more streamlined process.

“Students and parents can click on a link. If they have Fafsa help, we can help them in-traditions or we can schedule a zoom call to help fulfill FASFA,” Yanchak said.

This year, parents and students are filling different parts of the form. Changes have created serious problems for students who do not have social security numbers, green card holders and unspecified parents who have no social security numbers.

“They will inform the US Education Department of who their parents are and who is contributing to their education,” said Yanchak. “Therefore, as they put those names, the US Education Department will send an email to the parents, and the parents only have to complete their section.”

Yanchak said that the US Education Department will release FASFA information to families and institutions by mid -March. Till then, Yachnak said that his ability to help was limited.

We can only assure them that if they have received an email from the US Education Department that everything is in work and it will do it to our institution when it should be, ”said the priest.

The students coming to participate in The Great Day on Thursday, 29 February to win the scholarship and other awards are welcome.
