Robert grew up in the family farm in New Heaven, where he learned carpentry, plumbing and almost anything to design and repair. He also learned where bloods, Dutchman Ke-Brych and Morals increased; Where Brook turned into a small waterfall; And where the best hills were for sledging.
Robert attended the Bean Academy before continuing the Philips Exeter Academy. He later received the title of Magna Cum Loud from Harvard College in 1966, where he was also selected for the National Honor Society Fee Beeta Kappa. He completed his educational training with PhD from Harvard University in 1970.
Thus, reliable, Robert moved into a prestigious academic career as a professor of classics. He began teaching at the University of California, Berkeley, where he met his life’s love, Barbara Siler, with whom he married in New Heaven in 1973.
While northern California had its attractions, such as Sunny Weather and Wine Country were a small drive away, Vermont house. When Barbara was offered a job offer to teach at the University of Vermont, Robert was happy to return to his childhood home and raise two children, Ellenor and Cyrus. Robert joined Barbara in the Classics Department of Vermont University, retiring from his role as Liman-Roberts professor of classical languages and literature in 2017.
His interests surpassed the classics; Robert was also designed for local history and lineage. Over the years, he won several awards and fellowships and published a large number of books and articles in classics, lineages and history. His publications include the history of New Heaven (New Heaven in Vermont, 1761–1983), a family history and Middlesex County, three books on the probate records in the month. The discovery of his professional scholars was widespread, but included Roman Aqueducts and Agriculture. Understanding rural agricultural life from centuries past, there was no doubt of interest for a person who grew up in a field and developed the nature of farming in Vermont during his lifetime.
Robert was deeply dedicated to service, public and professional equally. He served as the New Heaven Town Auditor for more than a decade, for about two decades, a long -time officer of the Town Historian and the New Heaven Evergreen Cemetery Association. He served in school boards from 1986 to 1994, an officer in the church starting in 1981, and actively participated in countless historical societies and non -profit organizations. He reviewed the colleague for reputed classical magazines; Organized in several committee posts at Vermont University; And served as an external tenure evaluator for many famous universities, treasurer for the classical association of New England and trustee of the New England Historic lineage society.
After his retirement in 2017, Robert was able to completely dedicate himself to his past – mainly carpentry. He had a true gift for design aesthetics, which shines through large and small details, which works in the family house, and was built in the barn in 2020. The barn included Robert’s favorite architectural element – a Kapola and horse windows. It also claims a springbock vethanwen, which pays tribute to her granddaughter Maya.
Maya was born in 2020 in Steelbosh, South Africa. This eleventh generation Vermonter shares with Robert after being born far away and join New Heaven as a newborn. She is enamored as her grandfather because she was her. She was the full light of her life and brought her endless pleasure in her last years (when she was not jumping on her or pulling her hair). Knowing that his granddaughter would grow up in the same house and chase butterflies, hunting wildflower and sledging on the ground that was much for him, there was a comfort and a joy.
He was a lifetime student of history and genealogy. He cared about family, space spirit, work quality and service institutions which were important for Robert. So, too, there was good food and alcohol, as well as pure vermont maple syrup. He never met a dog or a pig, whom he did not love or a bird he did.
His unique personality came in many ways; He had a bizarre humor that was peeping on the occasion. Whenever he occurred on an interesting name or phrase, he will save it for use later. Fortunately, for their children, such names were given on pets, such as Teselgrav (a wrong reminder called Teslagrav) and Haptia Josa (meaning “reverse, alive”) in Greek).
Robert survived his wife, Barbara Sayler Rhoders, New Heaven; Son, Burlington, VT’s Cyrus Roders; Daughter, Ellenor de Villiers, her husband, Richard de Villiers and Robert’s granddaughter, Maya de Villiers, all of New Heaven; Also many other close friends, extended family members, and many dedicated and alumni affectionate.
