Schools compete in Lake County mock trial competition – Chicago Tribune

A team of Main South High School students recently secured first place in the mock trial competition at Lake County Courthouse Tower.

The school was judged the best between 20 from the area which attended the 20th annual program on 24 February. Whitney Young Magnet High School from Chicago finished third, while a team from Timothy Christian School claimed another.

A panel featuring representatives of the Lake County legal community – including prosecutors, public guards and practicing lawyers – was classified to participants on their ability, presentation and effectiveness. Several judges of the 19th judicial circuit voluntarily acted to preside over the tests.

This year, teams defended a fictional trial and prosecuted, including three students, who were involved in a car accident with a municipal vehicle parked on the roadside. The case was made to emphasize the dangers of driving distracted by the Illinois Bar Association and fail to follow the law designed to slow out the motorists or to move for closed vehicles on the roadside.

Mock trial teams tried the case twice as both prosecutors and defense lawyers. The students worked as both lawyers and witnesses.

Judge Victoria Rostyy and Christon Bishop, who brought a mock trial program to Lake County in 2004, participated again this year. The program was sponsored by the law -related education initiative, Lake County Bar Association, Lake County Bar Foundation and Lake County Juvenile Officers Association.

The statewide mock trial competition will be held later this month.
