NCCU professor heading to wheelchair basketball hall of fame after life brings detour

Professor of Northern Carolina Central University will soon be included in the National Wheelchair Basketball Hall of Fame.

As a college student in Texas, Andrea Woodson-Smit had a desire and physical stature of women to play basketball, although a disability forced him to play the game sitting down. That is, in a wheelchair equipped for competitive wheelchair basketball.

This is a sport that he took as a mission to expand the game around the world and here at home. Quickly, it was her dream to compete in women’s basketball.

That is, until arthritis in both hips deteriorated.

“He just brought the energy back when the basketball was taken away from me and therefore, came back to my life, just was incredible,” he said.

Eventually, his arthritis issues forced another change in his plans. He saw that men dominated the game and women had fewer opportunities. They were also paid less.

So he assisted the NWBA (National Wheelchair Basketball Association) with grants. “That grant allowed an opportunity for individuals that there were no financial obstacles for them,” Woodson-Smith said.

He worked for the US State Department in his “Sports Envoy Program”, which gives him opportunities to include more girls and women in sports worldwide.

Woodson-Smith continued his role in the interim chairman of Cannology and Entertainment Administration, interim president of Nekan Central. This is part of the long legacy of his service.

He said, “I was already kept for me.” All I had to do is to follow it, and it took me to the places I had never dreamed of going. I never dreamed of leaving the United States. I would never have dreamed that this must have been my life and it is beautiful. ,

On 13 April, Woodson-Smith will join her husband and children as she is included in the NWBA Hall of Fame in Richmond, Virginia.
