(CNN)-Iceland has extracted its world-famous blue lagoon due to near seismic activity that suggests a “adjacent” volcanic explosion, the country’s public broadcast Rúv said on Saturday.
According to Rauv, magma has begun to flow after “acute seismic activity” in the surrounding area of a popular geothermal spa, a popular geostation spa, its milky-blue color.
The depth of the magma, about four kilometers (2.5 mi), means that a blast can occur within hours, the volcano Thorwaldur Thoradorson told Ruva.
According to Ruv, the nearby city of Grindavik is also being evacuated. Police said the withdrawal was “going well” and in recent times there were only a few people in the city, the public broadcaster said.
In a statement on his website on Saturday, Blue Lagoon said that it started withdrawing its complex due to an increase in seismic activity in a known area a few kilometers away. ,
The operation will at least stop by the end of Sunday, when the situation will be re -obtained, it said.
The statement said, “We will continue to closely follow the guidelines and recommendations of the authorities, working with them to monitor the progress of events.”
Located under one -hour drive from Iceland’s capital and largest city Reckjavik, Blue Lagoon is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the country.
The site is part of the South -West Iceland’s Recines Peninsula – a thick finger of land pointing to the west in the North Atlantic Ocean from Reckjavik. Along with Blue Lagoon, the peninsula is home to the main airport, Iceland, Kflavik International.
Iceland is one of the most active volcanic regions on the planet. Instead of being a central volcano, the Recjes Peninsula is dominated by a rift valley, with lava fields and cones.
In November, the blue lagoon was closed for a week after measuring 1,400 earthquakes in 24 hours.
