Justice Matters have been highlighting the importance of abolishing old homeless through a comprehensive plan over the years. We have researched other communities, which have eliminated old homelessness through their “zero manufactured” programs and encouraged the city of Lawrence and Douglas County to bring the “void” program to our community.
On January 17, during the work session of a joint city and the County Commission, “a place for everyone” strategic plan was presented by several dedicated cities and county employees. The written goal of the scheme is: “By 2028, we will create a system that achieves functional zero through policy, system and environmental changes, resulting in all the residents of Douglas County reach the fundamental human rights of safe, accessible, accessible and affordable housing, and to be homeless is a rare and brief event.”
Community members who have been working on this issue for years, we will now have to say, “Thank you, thank you.” Thanks to all those who have worked tirelessly to draft the scheme. Thanks to our city and county commissioners for continuous efforts.
As a community, we are in early stages with the proposed plan. Now the next phase of work begins. Justice Cases encourage the city and county commissions to approve, implement and fund the comprehensive plan at the earliest. The plan will save lives in our community and will work to make Lawrence a place for everyone.
