Voters of North Carolina will need to show photo identity in this year’s elections.
Primary Election Day is Tuesday, March 5.
The 2018 voter ID law of the state implemented during the 2023 municipal elections, but many more people will face the need in 2024 when the race for the President and the Governor will be on the ballot.
What ID do I need to vote in North Carolina?
The simplest way to comply with voters is to show the license of a legitimate northern carolina driver.
For people with expired licenses, or for those who do not have at all, rules can be more complex.
The North Carolina State Board of Election has published a list of dozens of acceptable forms of ID, including several schools and college IDs, military or veteran photo IDs or tribal nomination cards with IDs or photos.
Without identity card, for those, the Northern Carolina Department of motor vehicles offers them free for non-operators who can provide:
- A document confirms age and identity
- A social security card or a document proves that they have a social security number
- For American citizens, a document proves residency
Those who want to get an ID can also go to the board of their home county election office, which will take their picture and verify their name, date of birth and social security number to create an ID that can be used in this election and future elections. This option will be available during the initial voting in all future election cycles.
Vote in Northern Carolina without photo ID
Those who want to vote, but they do not have any qualifying ID, they will not be overcome. They are known as the “provisional ballot” – the authorities that will not be counted, until the voter comes back to show his ID later, or if the voter explains that they do not have an ID, they will be allowed to count.
Similarly, those who are not registered to vote, but want to vote, can sign up to vote during the initial polling at the polling place.
