Richmond-Burton’s Gina Scichowski takes second place – Shaw Local

Richmond-Beton Senior Jina Scocowski entered the IHSA Girls Bowling State Tournament with high expectations, and did not disappoint the house.

Scichowski rolled a series of 663 and 643 in the Saturday final at Cherry Bowl in Rockford and finished second for Ariana Arujo of Stag, which ended with 2,634 PINs.

Scichowski played 2,597 rolls for the second in their 12 matches, the Prospect’s Catilin Ruskzak (2,588) and the Ella Stink (2,586) of Jolit West and Mia Antoma (2,578).

“I was expecting the first place for my senior year, but the second is still good,” SCIWSKI said. “I wanted to have a medal, but I could see myself first. I had high expectations for myself.”

Scichowski was fourth with 1,291 after Friday. Araujo was second with 1,328.

Scichowski played 257 to start on Saturday, followed by 223 and 183. She ended with 199, 227 and 217. She was only 20 pins behind going to the final game and played in a group of Araujo throughout the day.

“I kept a good head game. Yesterday I landed on myself after my fourth game (175) and I did not perform my best,” said Scocovski. “(In the previous game) I just wanted to bowl the best that I could. I didn’t know I was below 20, I was not watching the score.”

Scichowski will participate in his newly formed team next year in Lake County College and Bowl. She is uncertain from the major field of her study, so she plans to work and compete on general education classes.

Steve Brugioni has worked as a private coach of Scichowski over the last three years and was thrilled by his state performance.

Brugioni said, “When we could not strike and were simply solid, they made the frame.” “When we were struggling to find a strike, she never came down. She was just firm. She is a very experienced tournament bowler. She remained concentrated.

“She made a very strong start. That last game, we are chasing 20 pins. The girl who won was better and got some more attacks than Jeena.”

Scichowski finished 14th as a Sophomore in the state, but last year when he came with food poisoning a week before the sectional tournament, he missed the qualifying.

“I was really ill and did not bowl well,” she said. “(At the end of this week) was terrible. It was definitely a mental game. It was fun.”
