Bees discuss with hotel activity, but is it the correct type? A graduate student at the University of Illinois is doing research on bees and needs help-as a donated bee hotels-to understand whether these man-made nests are helping or damaging the bee population in Illinois.
Similar to birds or bat houses, bee hotels are artificial houses made of stems of plant or are drilled for cavity-ghosle bees that people can put in their yard.
This idea is to provide homes for indigenous bees in areas where there is no natural nest content, but research shows mixed results on their benefits. Some studies have found that hotels led to the diversity of high species, while others warn that they host aggressive bees, diseases and parasites.
Timo Woman, an entomology graduate student at the University of Illinois, is interested in indigenous bee protection and bee parasites, and is operating a research project on bee hotels in Illinois.
“It is clear that there is a lot that we do not know,” said Weman. “Bee hotels can be easy goals for natural enemies of native bees. Under such close quarters, diseases and parasites are free to go from one nest to the next, and insect -eating birds can clean bee hotels in an easy food.”
Veman’s plan is to collect bee hotels from rural and urban areas in Illinois to collect and explore them to understand which species species are using. The project requires donation of bee hotels from the public. Anyone who donates a hotel for the project will receive a personal report on conclusions and guidelines for future efforts to support bees.
“Each hotel will be important for a better understanding of what is going on inside and how we can help all the native bee population better,” Veman said.
Explore more about the project and learn how to submit a bee hotel that is at least two years old. Qualifying be hotel submission is required by 1 March. Drop-off spaces will be provided after the hotel is determined to be worthy.
